BIOGRAPHY
Sarah Knight is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Music program
at Memorial University and a proud Co-Owner of Royal Avalon Parties. Ever since she was a young child, Sarah has had a passion for music and a strong desire to share it with others. Sarah first began her training in piano at the age of seven and went on to take lessons in voice, dance and acting for several years after. Sarah always knew that she wanted to be a music teacher and opened her business, Sarah’s Stars, at seventeen. This performing arts program gave youth in rural communities the opportunity to learn about musical theatre and was active from 2017-2021. During this time, Sarah’s Stars performed at the local Kiwanis Music Festival, held fundraisers for Ronald McDonald House, hosted Sarah’s Stars Summer Camp and put off various productions. In 2019, Sarah directed and produced Beauty and the Beast Jr with a cast of 26 members from Old Perlican to St. John's. Beauty and the Beast Jr was held at the Sheila NaGeira Theatre in Carbonear and was an enormous success with two sold-out shows! Aside from her business endeavours, Sarah has been in several productions such as Annie, Nunsense & The Sound Of Music (Gussied Up Productions, 2013-2016); How’s About A Time? (Madrock Theatre Troupe, 2016); Our Divas Do Christmas (TaDa Events, 2016) and Scrooge (Peter MacDonald Productions, winter 2022). As for solo pursuits, Sarah has sung at many festivals, concerts and fundraisers. Particularly, her proudest moments include being a featured performer at the Planned Parenthood Annual Charity Gala in 2019 and her fourth-year graduation recital, My Heart Wants to Sing. Through her time at Memorial University, Sarah had the opportunity to study voice with Meghan Herder and learn a wealth of information about vocal pedagogy. Now, she looks forward to sharing this knowledge with her future students! This fall, Sarah will begin the Music Education as a Second-Degree program at Memorial University. Once she has finished her studies, Sarah plans to teach classroom music while maintaining a private music studio on the side. When Sarah is not teaching at CFPA, you can find her performing as your favourite princesses! Just last year, Sarah and her dear friend Shae Williams opened up their princess company, Royal Avalon Parties, after several years of doing parties. Royal Avalon Parties was established in 2021 to offer high-quality entertainment for special events such as birthday parties and fundraisers. Sarah loves to perform most as their Anna-inspired character but has also performed as Elsa, Rapunzel and Ariel-inspired characters! Sarah is absolutely delighted to be joining the CFPA team and cannot wait to offer both private voice and piano lessons this fall! |
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I believe that every child deserves access to music education: As someone who is very passionate about music and has grown up learning various instruments, I have first-hand experience of the positive effects that music can bring. Music can enhance cognitive development and create social and emotional connections. Music can also teach us how to improve our motor skills, memory and discipline. When we incorporate learning music into our lives, so many wonderful things can happen!
I believe that music encourages self-growth, builds confidence and encourages exploration: Through my program, Sarah’s Stars, I have had the privilege to watch my students grow over the last five years. As a teacher, I was honoured to instil a love of performing into so many young children. One of my favourite rewards of being a teacher is to watch a student’s self-confidence evolve over our time together.
I believe in creating an individualized approach to meet the needs and goals of every student: As a voice teacher and lifelong student, I know that each person requires an individualized approach. Our instrument is a unique and beautiful one that requires specific methods and techniques crafted for each individual. I am determined to meet my students where they are and to give them the skills to grow even further!
I believe in teaching with empathy, compassion and kindness: Our mental health can have a significant impact on our voice. As your teacher, I am here to support you and be in your corner no matter what. We are in this together, and I will customize your lesson to ensure you have the best experience possible!
I believe that music is an art form for everyone to enjoy: I wholeheartedly believe that everyone can create music for themselves and can share it with others. Music is found everywhere in our daily lives, and anyone can discover it.
I believe that music has the power to heal and unite us: Whether it’s a lullaby you remember from your childhood or a favourite song from that long car ride- music is present in our daily lives and will always be there when we need it most. I am completely fascinated by the power of music therapy, and how it connects us in the brightest and darkest of our days.
I believe that music gives us the power to be vulnerable, and to share our hearts with others through song: Music has the power to create emotional awareness in any student and to develop a person’s compassion and understanding. I love when we can personally connect to a song and that it can hold such a significant meaning in our lives.
I believe that music brings us together as a community and can offer endless opportunities: Growing up, I was given many opportunities to travel with my school’s choir and band. I highly encourage everyone to discover what musical experiences are open to you and go from there!
I believe in cultivating an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome: I am dedicated to creating a safe space for my students who identify themselves as part of the 2SLGBTQI+ and those who are allies.
