When Courtney started teaching ten years ago, she had seventeen loyal students and taught out of The Music Corner in Conception Bay South. For as long as she could remember, Courtney had dreams of creating a place to put off grand scale music and theatre productions, and a safe place where a community of musicians could collaborate and practice the art of performing. Courtney wanted to create a place where every student felt like a star. Those dreams are now a reality. Now, CFPA is a performance academy for over 250 budding musicians and actors. A place that encompasses training in voice, drama, performance and student collaboration. Courtney thrives on creating a warm, encouraging environment for students of all ages. What is most important to Courtney is that her students learn autonomy, to love and enjoy music and the arts, to have an encouraging community to lean on, and be courageous. Take risks, explore and create.

Courtney is, first and foremost, a lover of story telling, self-expression, discovery, courage and finding beauty in peculiar places. As a local entertainer and actress, Courtney's favourite past theatre credits include: Ariel in Footloose (2012), Jane in Tarzan (2014), and Sherrie in Rock of Ages (2015). As a singer-songwriter, Courtney is working towards releasing an acoustic mellow pop album with her writing partner, Frank Jarvis.
Courtney is dedicated to sharing her passions with others, including merging her two loves, empowering people through music and spreading awareness of mental health issues. Courtney developed the concept and book for "Not Myself Today", an adaptive and educational pop jukebox musical for youth. "Not Myself Today" is a therapeutic musical that gives students the opportunity to add to the script and story, empowering student choices and giving them a greater sense of accomplishment. "Not Myself Today" was written to raise awareness for mental health and has been workshopped once, and produced over five times to sold out audiences. Courtney received an Art Smarts Grant in 2017 to produce NMT at Waterford Valley High School with their choir, band, art and drama classes. This was one of the most rewarding experiences, especially after seeing students write about their experiences positively in the school's yearbook.
Courtney is the owner/operator of CFPA, and the creator of the unique Broadway Performance Division. Courtney is passionate about empowering people through the arts, and fostering safe spaces for students of all ages to be authentic. Our Broadway Program offers more than triple threat training - it inspires students to discover their autonomy, think for themselves and find joy within themselves, their community and their art form. Our program is non-competitive, adaptive and student led, meaning all people can enjoy the benefits that live theatre and music have to offer. CFPA is a place of acceptance, diversity and inclusion. Unlike a class where every student is to perform the same action or a choir where every student is to sing in unison, our program offers individual roles for each student, tailored to their specific needs and goals. Perfection is not the goal. Honest human interaction and authentic storytelling through music, dance and acting is our focus--and there is a space for everyone, including you.
Courtney is proud to be a forever student and enjoys studying and educating her staff in vocal pedagogy. Courtney's education started as a voice major at MUN School of Music under the guidance of Dr. Schiller and Shelley Neville, and continued under Meghan Herder (2011-2014) and Dr. Shannon Coates (2020-Present). Courtney previously worked as a Kindermusik Early Childhood Educator at The Music Corner for three years before completing the Business Program at Kindermusik University. Kindermusik's priority of student led teaching and appropriate activities for development of the whole child inspired Courtney to further her pedagogy education in voice and apply these concepts in all areas of her teaching.

my Teaching philosophy
by courtney fowler
I believe everyone, at any age, can participate in the arts.
I believe in creating a healthy voice through correct posture, proper breathing techniques and releasing unnecessary tension.
I believe music teaches discipline, courage and self expression.
I believe music can be therapeutic, cathartic and stress relieving.
I believe through music we can learn how to be confident, expressive, empathetic people.
I believe that theatre and improv can teach you skills that you will carry with you for the rest of your life. They help you connect with your peers. They build confidence in your ideas. You learn to compromise, use empathy, and build on team working skills. They teach quick thinking, adaptability, creativity and courage. They improve public speaking skills, stage presence and self-confidence.
I believe in community, building up our peers through positive reinforcement, friendships and encouragement. I believe in creating a safe, fun environment where the student feels open to expressing themselves and being their truest, most creative self.
I believe that performing in a group can help one’s self esteem and performance anxiety.
I believe in connecting with each student personally to find different ways they learn to better serve them. I believe in letting students choose music they enjoy, as long as it is challenging and appropriate.
I believe in continual growth as a teacher. Working with other musicians can help you grow as a musician, which is why I try to perform as often as I can, and encourage my students to do the same.
