how will performance & the broadway show be different this year?

no sunday rehearsals

Performance classes will not be rehearsing Sundays this year, as there is no need to do so. They will all perform in a Broadway show in April or May, put off by only their class, 6x6 feet apart, singing masked, spaced 12 feet from audience, streaming available for additional family, and following all restrictions and guidelines.

individual shows in the black box theare

One of the many benefits of our new location is a 1100sq/ft warehouse space, and a 1200sq/ft mezzanine that can be transformed in a black box theatre during show weeks.

Advanced Performance and Drama
classes will perform a 30-60 minute musical in the black box theatre space we have in our new building!
Students will have more spoken lines and singing roles to fill in this production. Students will be offered a lead role, but it is not mandatory - we work with children on an individual level and celebrate their personal accomplishments.

Open Performance will also be working on their own Broadway medley in March to add to the Songs From Broadway Show Series!

what can i expect from performance class this year?

Open Performance offers a condensed 45 minute curriculum of the disciplines below in a relaxed, fun environment. Instead of three teachers, this class is lead by the fabulous Calyssa Squires, who will guide students weekly through a series of songs, dance and acting games. For students who want to study each area more in depth, we offer an advanced class.

Advanced Performance and Drama will be in groups of 20 kids, but separated into weekly sections of 1:5, 1:5, 1:10 Teacher:Student ratios. Groups will not be the same every week as we want all our students to bond to get to know each other. [Community is important.] During the week, class will look like this:

30 mins of Dance: Aimee Coles is our Director of Dance, teaching APD, and/or checking in on classes with other teachers periodically. 6 ft, low intensity - 12 ft, high intensity work out. Low numbers for individualized corrections.

30 mins of Acting: Jody Rideout brings us character development, improv, script and scene study, acting through song, and developing your skills as an actor, whether singing, movement or spoken word.

30 minutes of Singing: Courtney Fowler will be leading a voice masterclass each week with different vocal assignments. We will be working on individual songs similar to how you would in private voice. Students will perform for a portion of the class (5-10 students) and cheer each other on. Courtney will provide feedback for them to work on their selections. Students also have the chance to enrol in an online vocal symposium (similar to Kiwanis but Kiwanis was cancelled this year due to Covid). A team of teachers and I (led by Angela Warren) are developing this online symposium for our students as a performance opportunity. so this will give them more individual instruction for their Broadway solos. They can also safely duet with other students in the class 12ft apart because we have the space to do so.

are you offering the student teacher energy exchange program this year?

Previously, CFPA has offered an energy exchange program where students could work as a student teacher in a class below their experience level, and receive a class of equal time for free.

This year, we cannot afford the TA program with the way COVID-19 has affected our business. Right now we are losing a 30 min lesson every 2 hours, a half hour after and 15 minutes before every class we offer, and we were just forced to move into a bigger (more expensive) location to give our students enough space to socially distance. On top of this, the cost of supplies to keep our building clean and safe has increased dramatically.

CFPA is offering a referral program instead! You will receive 25$ towards your tuition fees every single time a new family registers. This means, if you spread the word far and wide and long enough, you could have your first month's of classes free!

Broadway Show and Recital Performances were the main reasons student helpers were absolutely necessary, but we are doing everything in the black box theatre space this year on a much smaller level - it will be like a throw back to the old days when we worked in Barbara Barrett and the LSPU hall!

can i volunteer to be a student teacher?

Some of our CFPA families have asked if students can volunteer to be a student teacher, and still pay for a class in their age group. Because of social distancing, this would only be possible in some of our classrooms. However, if you would like to volunteer with CFPA, we would love to accept you with open arms.

Contact Courtney or Calyssa to find out which classes can provide enough social distance to accept volunteers. In our current climate, we can only accept one volunteer per class.

At CFPA, we work to create a safe, nonjudgemental space for students to discover their authentic self and find the courage to display that confidently, with the support of an accepting community that celebrates uniqueness.
